So this morning's post won't be covered in shamrocks and feature little green-suited leprechauns with outrageous accents tipping their hats to you (that's for later tonight...LOL) - in fact, if you're in a big party mood you probably shouldn't read it.
Today I'm writing about how thankful I am, in general, for the life I have and all the people in it who make it something worth living. (You can still escape.....)
Recently my best friend has had a very serious health scare - one which has not only dramatically affected her short-term but will affect her for the rest of her life. It has led to radical changes in her diet & exercise and this morning, surgery. With any luck, today will be the only time spent in the hospital but there is no guarantee of that and all that we, her friends & family, can do is hope and pray for the best of all possible outcomes.
Her ability to face these challenges head on, with a brave face and not simply pull a blanket over her head, huddle in bed crying "Why me?" has been an inspiration. Could I face the same hurdles she has with such grace & equanimity? I'd like to think so but I'd probably be the idiot with the covers pulled over her head moaning "Why me?" while throwing back copious amounts of vodka.
My friend was due to have surgery tomorrow as part of her treatment and we've been nervously discussing this for the past few weeks since it was scheduled. I got into work today to find emails that said her surgery had been moved up a day and by the time I was reading them, she would be out of surgery. I immediately texted her wonderful partner and he replied back with the best news there could be - all has gone well!
For that I'm just very, very Thankful.
We often take for granted the people that make up the fabric of our lives & keep it from being a bundle of stupid problems, random irritations & plain old drudgery.
Today I'm thankful for:
- my best friend being ok
- my family & friends who always support me & want the best for me
- my job that allows me to have a lifestyle that I enjoy
- the onset of spring - we may have a few more tastes of winter but it's coming
- the fact that I am not in the middle of a disaster like we see in Japan, Haiti, Pakistan etc
- the chance I have every day to make the world a better place in some way (big or small)
And that's me for today....go have some green beer folks!
